Damaraland 4x4

4×4 tour

Damaraland 4x4

The „Damaraland 4x4“ is completely new in our programm: with a much more offroad character this tour may be considered and serves as perfect warm-up introduction for our most challenging „Kaokoland 4x4 Tour“. Both mentioned tours are conducted with the 4x4 Toyota Landcruiser

The Damaraland – in the northwestern Namibia – is probably one of the most beautiful landscapes: wild, lonesame, rough, harsh and manifold. There are smallest farm tracks and remote trails that serve amazing impressions and demand more riding skills than on the „normal“ gravel roads – thus an ideal introduction tour for our famous „Kaokoland Tour“ that you may have in focus for future time. The Toyota Landcruiser is very comfortable to drive and is perfectly "adapted" kind of offroad driving on smaller tracks and partially very rocky terrains.

The tour embraces many highlights, stunning comfortable lodgings and diverse impressions of this central northwestern part of Namibia: across central highlands and farmlands of Khomas Hochland, it first leads into the legendary Namib Desert before it turns north to Erongo Mountains, Spitzkoppe and Brandberg Mountain. The tour leads mainly through central and up to northernmost Damaraland bordering Etosha NP and turns back through wonderful sceneries of Huab River and Ugab Terraces until finally visit a large game reserve at Mount Etjo.

We recommend that all participants train or refresh their off-road driving experience, e.g. on a 4x4 off-road courses from training centers in your region. In addition, we will have also a practical, intensive briefing on site (directly before the tour).

Tour profile: 13 travel days/12 nights. Total distance approx. 2600 km. Gravel roads, fairly remote dirt tracks with easy to rough enduro terrain. Daily stages of between 250 and 350km. Please check our note on Offroad-road tours

* The respective accommodations for the standard tour may vary due to availability. We book comparable alternatives without significantly affecting the route. Should this become necessary in individual cases, we will of course inform you.

Your route day by day

Day 1: Arrival in Namibia / Windhoek Mountain Lodge
Windhoek Mountain Lodge
(1 Night)

Arrival at Windhoek International Airport and pick-up by us. A one-hour transfer takes you to our comfortable Windhoek Mountain Lodge in the Auasberg Mountains south of the capital Windhoek - our base station for all Gravel Travel tours in Namibia. After a good breakfast, you will have the opportunity to acclimatize and relax by the pool with relaxing views of the surrounding mountain ranges and the vast bushveld. And if you like, you can enjoy your first Namibian sundowner on the viewing platform above the lodge before the legendary "Bushman fondue" calls for dinner ...

Day 2: Auas Mountains / Windhoek Mountain Lodge
Windhoek Mountain Lodge
(1 Night)

Well rested and relaxed, today we will deal with a detailed travel briefing and a thorough briefing on the 4x4 vehicles, GPS and radio devices. Then we go for an approx. 100 km inroduction tour, where you can familiarise yourself with the traffic, road conditions and technology so that we can start the tour well prepared the next morning.

Day 3: Windhoek - Namib-Desert
Namib Desert Lodge
(1 Night)

After a short morning briefing with your tour guide, we finally set off. The first stage is a gentle start, heading west on a good gravel road through the rolling farmland of the Khomas Highlands. Later, the route becomes much more winding until we reach the Spreetshoogte Pass, where a spectacular viewpoint allows us to see far into the Namib Desert... We descend steep serpentine roads and the temperatures adjust to the desert landscape. Along mountain ranges through endless expanses, we pass through Solitaire to reach our uniquely located lodge in a dreamlike dune landscape...

Day 4: Namib Desert – Swakopmund
Beach Hotel Swakopmund
(1 Night)

After a hearty breakfast, we set off again today towards ‘civilisation’, passing the famous Tropic of Capricorn and continuing over a pass through the wild and rugged landscape of the Gaub River to the Kuiseb Canyon. The rough gravel road of the Kuiseb Pass leads to the northern part of the huge Namib-Naukluft National Park, and the route across it to the west leads to the cool Atlantic Ocean. The lonely expanse, which appears so lifeless, surprises us again and again with oryx antelopes, springboks, ostriches and mountain zebras, which can sometimes cross our ‘pad’ at high speed. Only immediately before the coast do high dune belts open up again and the air becomes noticeably fresher. In Swakopmund, we check into a good hotel and have the opportunity to explore the historic coastal town and dip our feet in the cold sea.

Day 5: Swakopmund - Erongo Mounatins
Ai-Aiba The Rockpainting Lodge
(1 Night)

From Swakopmund, the route takes us northwards along the Atlantic Ocean through Dorob National Park on a smooth, solid salt road, leaving a lasting impression of Namibia's beach landscapes on the ‘Skeleton Coast’ – whose apparent hostility to life from a human perspective may belie the unique, sensitive habitat for many rare plants, small animals and breeding birds. We set course for the magnificent Spitzkoppe, which rises out of the flat semi-desert landscape and is also known as Namibia's ‘Matterhorn’. We follow its powerful attraction on simple tracks that allow us to pass between the bizarre, smooth granite formations. From here, we can already see today's destination, the mighty Erongo Mountains on the horizon. After a short break, we continue eastwards on rough gravel roads, finally reaching the next lodge along the steep walls of this ancient volcanic ruin.

Day 6: Erongo Mountains - Brandberg
Brandberg White Lady Lodge
(1 Night)

The Erongo gave us a first taste of the Damaraland that lies ahead. Heading west, we leave this mountainous landscape behind us. When the air is clear, the Brandberg is already visible on the horizon. But first, we descend again onto tiny farm tracks through the bush, passing small Damara settlements with their cattle roaming freely. Over the Spitzkoppe in the morning light, we then head north and cross the open landscape and the wide riverbed of the Omarurus to reach our next destination via the mining town of Uis – the lower-lying Ugab River Valley on the edge of the mountain range, where our next lodge is located in a fabulous landscape, surrounded by mighty ana trees. A place that desert elephants also particularly like to visit...

Day 7: Brandberg - Twyfelfontein
Twyfelfontein Country Lodge
(1 Night)

By now, everyone should be warmed up and accustomed to the WR 250 – which is good, because today's stage requires more skill and takes us into a completely different world, where we are unlikely to see another soul. But in return, we are rewarded with an overwhelming, almost untouched and diverse natural landscape. Sand, gravel, fine and coarse rock, riverbed crossings – everything is included. First, we drive around the huge Brandberg until we reach the Ugab river gorge, where springboks, giraffes, elephants, lions and rhinos still roam freely – we will keep a careful lookout. The stony desert landscape is a valuable habitat. The peculiar and rare giant plant Welwitschia, for example, can often be found here in impressive specimens, as can the spherical Euphorbia broom bushes – highly poisonous – but rhinos also feed on them. Through the beautiful black and deep red rock surfaces of the Doros Crater, the Brandberg massif disappears on the horizon and we finally arrive at Twyfelfontein in the late afternoon via the ‘Burnt Mountain’ ...

Day 8: Twyfelfontein - Kamanjab
Oppi-Koppi Rest Camp
(1 Night)

Twyfelfontein is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to thousands of rock paintings and engravings. Visiting them would exceed our time frame, but you can still admire some engravings on a large rock slab right in front of the lodge. After a hearty breakfast, we continue northeast today, with diverse tracks through remote landscapes ahead of us. We leave the lodge off the public roads through the beautiful area of the Aba Huab River to the large Huab main riverbed, an important catchment area for desert elephants and rhinos. Via Palmwag, a larger gravel road takes us through table mountain landscapes to the Grootberg Pass on the Etendeka Plateau, which will offer us great views.

Day 9: Kamanjab - Aba-Huab River
Twyfelfontein Adventure Camp
(1 Night)

The Damaraland tour is undoubtedly an extremely contrasting and fascinating journey – even over such short distances, it showcases Namibia's diverse facets. Today, we take a southerly route that leads us back towards Aba-Huab. On narrow and very winding farm roads, we drive through the typical Mopane bush savannah with its chalk-white soil. We pass the wide Huab riverbed again with its huge ana and acacia trees, which provide important food for the desert elephants, and in the afternoon we reach our picturesque safari tented lodge on the Aba-Huab River – nestled against imposing rock formations, with a view of the fantastic landscape around Twyfelfontein ...

Day 10: Aba Huab River - Vingerklip
Vingerklip Lodge
(1 Night)

It's hard to leave this place, but the tour still has some great routes and experiences to offer, so today we're heading towards Vingerklip Lodge. We stay off the usual gravel roads used by most tourists in this region for most of the time and, for the sake of driving pleasure, take all the smaller farm roads that lead us through Damara settlement areas via Khorixas to the Ugab terraces. The Ugab River has literally carved up the landscape here, and table-like elevations make this landscape appear strange and different once again, especially the rock finger, which rises up in a bizarre shape and rests on what appears to be a small base – from our accommodation today, the once again extremely cosy Vingerklip Lodge, we can admire the ‘Vingerklip’ in the evening and morning light.

Day 11: Vingerklip - Omaruru
Mount Etjo Safari Lodge
(1 Night)

Today's 280 km stage takes us out of the Ugab Valley to the south and through a series of small Damara settlements along quiet tracks. Via Omatjete, we reach the small town of Omaruru, which we already know, where we stop and meet in one of the many cafés for a break before continuing north on the sandy track. A pleasant route through bush savannah takes us to one of the most beautiful private game reserves on Mount Etjo. Here, Namibia's entire wildlife can be observed in peace and comfort.

Day 12: Omaruru - Windhoek
Windhoek Mountain Lodge
(1 Night)

Now we have the last leg of this journey ahead of us: after breakfast, we head south through beautiful mountain landscapes and central farmland to the small town of Omaruru. From here, the route continues on larger gravel roads through the old mission town of Otjimbingwe, located on the wide Swakop River Valley. From here, we return to the hilly Khomas Highlands and finally to Windhoek to our Gravel Travel base, the Windhoek Mountain Lodge. Our team awaits us with a well-chilled sundowner, with which we bid farewell to the sun and a last, great day of driving. Dinner offers us a delicious ‘braai’, where we can bring the tour to a cosy close with photos of our adventures.

Day 13: Windhoek / Return flight from Namibia

This day is entirely at your leisure to spend at the lodge or strolling around Windhoek, depending on when your return flight departs, which is often in the evening. This gives you the opportunity to visit some of the sights in the capital, and the numerous street cafés, bazaars and shops selling local handicrafts invite you to at least observe the colourful hustle and bustle around you. We will organise your transfer to the airport from the lodge.

These are usually overnight flights, so you will arrive home early the next morning.
