Namibia Classic

Motorbike tour

Namibia Classic (GTCL-326)

If you are seeking the “complete” Namibian experience, then this 14-day motorcycle tour is the right choice for you! It's the very first route Gravel Travel was starting with 30 years ago. We refined the tour over the years, it's providing a fantastic impression of Namibia. As it is even suitable for the less experienced endurist, this motorcycle tour became the most favorite one. It recently had been slightly modified in favour of more desert experience.

In the first week we explore the southern parts of Namibia down to the Orange River (bordering river to South Africa). This includes the Kalahari and Namib deserts, the Fish River Canyon as well as the famous Sossusvlei with world highest dunes.

Upon arrival in Swakopmund you have reached the central Atlantic coastal region and from there on we explore the northwestern part of the country. You pass the impressive Brandberg massif and discover an enormously manifold nature scenery of the rugged and yet romantic Damaraland with its free roaming African wildlife. A luxurious stay on the private game reserve of Mount Etjo Safari Lodge completes a wonderful motorbike tour with a fantastic safari experience.

Great places along the tour and the well selected accommodations in their unique settings serve many opportunities to relax and revive. A stay at the Windhoek Mountain Lodge before and after the tour will round off this comprehensive and extensive Namibian Adventure.

Your route day by day

2. day: Auas Mountains / Windhoek Mountain Lodge
Windhoek Mountain Lodge
(1 Night)

Arrival at Windhoek International Airport and pick-up by us. A one-hour transfer takes you to our comfortable Windhoek Mountain Lodge in the Auasberg Mountains south of the capital Windhoek - our base station for all Gravel Travel tours in Namibia. After a good breakfast, you will have the opportunity to acclimatize and relax by the pool with relaxing views of the surrounding mountain ranges and the vast bushveld. And if you like, you can enjoy your first Namibian sundowner on the viewing platform above the lodge before the legendary "Bushman fondue" calls for dinner ...

3.day: Auas Mountains / Windhoek Mountain Lodge
Windhoek Mountain Lodge
(1 Night)

Well rested and relaxed, today we will deal with a detailed travel briefing and a thorough briefing on the motorcycles and GPS devices. Then we go for an approx. 100 km inroduction tour, where you can familiarise yourself with the traffic, road conditions and technology so that we can start the tour well prepared the next morning.

4. day: Auas Mountains - Kalahari Desert
Kalahari Anib Lodge
(1 Night)

After the first "day-briefing" at morning with the tour guide, your round trip through Namibia begins with a drive on relatively flat gravel roads to the south-eastern part of the country. Thorn bush savannah and barren pastureland, where Karakul sheep graze, is typical for the region, determining the image of the peripheral area to the Kalahari. Via Uhlenhorst we drive through the charming Auob valley and finally arrive at our accommodation close to village of Mariental.

5. day: Kalahari Desert – Gariganus
Quivertree Forest Rest Camp
(1 Night)

The journey continues through fascinating landscapes of the western Kalahari, past the green oasis of Stampriet, where artesian wells enable the cultivation of vegetables and where the Auob River turns east. Here begins an interesting ascent and descent over the belt of dunes made of orange-red sand, which, however, look more like chains of hills due to the partially dense vegetation. Finally near Koës we reach the rolling hills and wide open spaces so typical of the Keetmanshoop area. The "Giant's Playground" - a collection of miraculously piled up boulders and the "Quiver Tree Forest" with its tree-high aloe plants on farm Gariganus invite you to visit. The simple guest chalets in which we live today are very close by.

6. day: Gariganus – Oranje River
Norotshama River Resort
(1 Night)

An eventful day awaits you once we have left the southern administrative and economic center of Keetmanshoop behind us after the first hour of driving. An interesting route with views of lonely mountains and seemingly endless plains leads us to our southernmost accommodation near Aussenkehr on the South African border. We also reach the mighty Fish River Canyon with its unforgettable panoramic views, a very special attraction in Namibia. With its length of over 100 km and its deep winding gorges, it is considered the second largest canyon in the world. We follow the gravel road on the eastern edge of the canyon, which is lined with fascinating landscapes, in a southerly direction. We then continue along the Orange to our destination for today, the Norotshama River Resort. We sleep here in chalets located directly on the Orange River.

7. day: Oranje River – Helmeringhausen
Helmeringhausen Adventure Camp
(1 Night)

In the morning we'll join for a canoe trip on the Oranje River, which winds its way through the landscape in wide arcs about 200 km before it flows into the Atlantic Ocean. Then we start with the motorbikes for our next day's stage in a westerly direction, along the Oranje. The mining town of Rosh Pinah on the edge of the restricted diamond area offers a welcome rest stop before we continue along the Namib Desert, via the Aus settlement, the Neisip Plain and through the majestic Tiras Mountains to our next, beautifully situated accommodation near Helmeringhausen.

8. day: Helmeringhausen - Sossusvlei
Sossusvlei Lodge
(1 Night)

After a refreshing shower under rustic camel thorn trees and a breakfast in the wilderness, we set off again and let ourselves be accompanied by a wonderful play of colors in the seemingly endless, hostile expanses and the mountain ranges on the outskirts of the Namib Desert, as well as past the incredibly high sand dunes of the desert Sesriem, where our next accommodation near Sossusvlei is located.

9. day: Expedition to Sossusvlei – Rotstock Mountains
Rostock Ritz Desert Lodge
(1 Night)

... today we visit the world-famous Sossusvlei, the highest dunes in the world - situated in the Namib-Naukluft National Park. To admire the first glow of this red dune backdrop in the early morning sunshine, we set off from the lodge before dawn in four-wheel drive vehicles and enjoy the morning in this unique landscape (unfortunately motorcycles are not permitted in the NP). In the afternoon, we continue our own tour and follow the gravel road northwards on a shorter but no less eventful stage. We soon reach Solitaire through open, game-rich savannah. Another special and unconventional accommodation in the lonely expanse of the Namib Desert awaits us near the Rotstock Mountains... A high-altitude pool lounge invites you to relax, with a fantastic view over the wide valleys of this extremely picturesque landscape...

10. day: Rotstock Mountains - Swakopmund
Hotel Deutsches Haus
(1 Night)

After a good breakfast, we set off towards "civilization" again today, passing the famous Tropic of Capricorn and continuing on a pass over the wild and rugged landscape of the Gaub River to the Kuiseb Canyon, another deeply furrowed river valley, where two German geologists hid for years during the Second World War and fought to survive. The impressive book "Wenn es Krieg gibt, gehen wir in die Wüste" is well worth reading. The Kuiseb Pass leads us over the rough gravel road into the huge Namib-Naukluft National Park and across to the cool Atlantic Ocean. The lonely expanse, which seems so lifeless,  surprises us again and again with oryx antelopes, springboks, ostriches and mountain zebras, which can cross our "pad" at speed. Only just before the coast do high dune belts reappear and the air becomes noticeably fresher. In Swakopmund, we stop off at a good hotel and have the opportunity to explore the historic coastal town and dip our feet in the cold sea.

11. day: Swakopmund
Hotel Deutsches Haus
(1 Night)

Swakopmund has a lot to offer: e.g. an excursion by quad bike into the sandy dunes south of the town, a fat bike ride through the town, boat tours in Walvisbay - this day is free for individual activities. In the town's charming souvenir and jewelry stores, you will find high-quality local handicraft products for every taste and budget. Unusual pieces of jewelry with Namibian semi-precious stones are particularly popular. The Crystal Gallery or the Natural History Museum - both located near the beach - provide particularly interesting and curious insights into the country's natural treasures. There is also a snake and reptile park and a seawater aquarium. Or how about a stroll through original cafés, pubs and restaurants, or across the woodcarvers' market to the historic "Jetty" - for a glass of champagne or sushi? The impression of numerous, well-preserved buildings in the typical colonial style from imperial times in the small town surrounded by pure desert scenery and fresh sea air ... definitely wants to be "reconnected" with the feeling of being in Africa...

12. day: Swakopmund - Uis
Brandberg White Lady Lodge
(1 Night)

From Swakopmund, the route leads us about 200 km northwards along the Atlantic Ocean through the Dorob National Park on a smooth, hard salt road and gives us a lasting impression of Namibia's beach landscapes of the "Skeleton Coast" - whose obvious hostility to life from a human perspective belies the unique, sensitive habitat for many rare plants, small animals and breeding birds. A detour to the seal colony in Cape Cross is possible before the route leads into the much hotter interior towards Uis. Passing the Messum Crater, we then pass the huge Brandberg massif with its rugged, black and red rocky landscape. A special companion on our route here is the Welwitschia, another rare, bizarre giant plant that can live to be well over 1000 years old. After the small mining town of Uis, we immerse ourselves in the wild, vast landscape of Damaraland for the last few kilometers - on the edge of the massive Brandberg massif, the lodge is located on the gallery forest of the Ugab River, which is known for its desert elephants, which occasionally pass by here to eat the nutritious tree pods ...

13. day: Uis - Grootberg Lodge
Grootberg Lodge
(1 Night)

After the briefing, we set off for northern Damaraland. We cross dry river beds, which can develop into respectable watercourses in the rainy season; this is where the desert elephants find their valuable habitat. The oxide-red, scree-covered table mountain landscapes with their spherical, silvery-green broom-shrub euphorbias reflect the typical landscape of this region and are also home to springboks, giraffes and oryx antelopes as well as the rare black rhino. We take a break in Twyfelfontein over lunchtime and reach the Grootberg Lodge in the late afternoon. It is tucked away on a plateau - with a gigantic view over the "Klip Rivier" canyon.

14. day: Grootberg - Mount Etjo Wildreservat
Mount Etjo Safari Lodge
(1 Night)

You should stop when it's at its best - so they say - we leave the Grootberg Lodge early in the morning, just for another beautiful destination: the Mount Etjo Safari Lodge. Over the Grootberg Pass, we take the winding roads down the table mountain steps of the Etendeka Plateau, pass the huge dry riverbed of the Huab and refuel in the small village of Khorixas. We drive through eastern Damaraland past settlements to the unique landscape of the Ugab Terraces, where the famous "Vingerklip", a gigantic rocky outcrop, adorns the landscape. Here we travel on smaller farm roads and reach the village of Kalkfeld through typical Mopane shrub savannah and very soon Mount Etjo, a striking table mountain, at the foot of which is the large game reserve and safari lodge of the same name. All kinds of game can be spotted at the lodge itself, including hippos if you're lucky! The barbecue dinner is a real treat and the second dessert is a close-up lion feeding.

15. day: Mount Etjo - Windhoek Mountain Lodge
Windhoek Mountain Lodge
(1 Night)

It's actually too nice to sleep in - when the hippos wake up early or the lions roar in the distance: if not the night before, then today is safari time ... we head out into the bush in an off-road vehicle - on the hunt for giraffes, zebras, antelopes, rhinos and elephants! We then set off on our last stage, back to Windhoek Mountain Lodge. We pass through central farmland on remote gravel roads and return to Namibia's central highlands via Omaruru and Otjimbingwe. We reach our GravelTravel base in the late afternoon on lonely back roads, where we are sure to have a very sociable evening with sundowners and a delicious barbecue.

16. day: Windhoek - Int. Airport (Hosea Kutako)

This day is at your leisure at the lodge or for a stroll in Windhoek. Depending on your individual departure time, you can plan your day freely today, as the flight often only leaves in the evening. Some of the sights can be visited in the capital and numerous street cafés as well as bazaars and shops with local handicrafts invite you to at least observe the hustle and bustle all around. Whatever the case, we'll make sure you get to the airport on time...
