Our exclusive New Year's Eve tour runs parallel to the original New Year's Eve Special Tour, but in the opposite direction, and it extends to the famous Sossusvlei! Central Highlands – Namib Desert – Atlantic Ocean – Central Damaraland and Central North-East Namibia: many Namibian highlights in concentrated form – combined with a great itinerary on a new route. For a New Year's Eve with very special memories and experiences.
The tour leads over the central Khomas Highlands, down the Spreegtshoogte Pass into the Namib Desert to Sossuvlei and then to the coast at Swakopmund, then to the Brandberg and over the Grootberg to Vingerklip. From here, we cross east to the legendary Waterberg Plateau and finally head for Mount Etjo, where a great safari and the Big Five await us. We reach our Gravel Travel base, the Windhoek Mountain Lodge, ‘off the beaten track’ on a beautiful route back through the lonely Swakop River Valley and Khomas Highlands ...
Tour profile: 13 days/12 nights. Total distance approx. 2,500 km. Paved gravel roads, easy enduro terrain, daily stages between 250 km and 350 km. Please note our information on riding ability.

Arrival at Windhoek International Airport and pick-up by us. A one-hour transfer will take you to our comfortable Windhoek Mountain Lodge in the Auas Mountains south of the capital Windhoek – our base station for all Gravel Travel tours in Namibia. After a hearty breakfast, you will have the opportunity to acclimatise and relax by the pool with a relaxing view of the surrounding mountain ranges and the vast bushland. And if you like, you can enjoy your first Namibian ‘sundowner’ on the viewing platform above the lodge before the legendary ‘Bushman fondue’ calls you to dinner...
Well rested and relaxed, today we will hold a detailed travel briefing and provide thorough instruction on the motorcycles and GPS devices. This will be followed by an approx. 100 km familiarisation tour, where you can get used to the traffic, road conditions and technology, so that we can set off well equipped and fully prepared the next morning.
After breakfast, we meet up, saddled and spurred, for a briefing and briefly discuss the first stage of the day. Then we set off: today our destination is Sossusvlei – we pass Windhoek on the outskirts and soon leave the tarmac road to descend into the hilly Khomas Highlands. The gravel road takes us through typical bushland with farms, and at the edge of the central highlands, a magnificent view of the endless Namib Desert opens up. The steep Spreegtshoogte Pass leads us down the escarpment. As a reward, we take a coffee break in Solitaire, accompanied by traditional apple pie, of course. Refreshed, we drive through the national park, past the Naukluft Mountains to our desert lodge... and celebrate the end of the year under the starry sky.
... those who wish to can drive (in a four-wheel drive) to the world-famous ‘Sossusvlei’ today, a salt-clay pan at the end of the Tsauchab River, surrounded by the highest dunes in the world. This unique landscape lies in the heart of the Namib-Naukluft National Park. To experience the first glow of these red dunes in the golden sunlight of the new year, you would have to get up very early – if you managed to get to bed at all? Otherwise, the motto for this day is: start the new year at a leisurely pace and enjoy the beautiful lodge by the pool...
After breakfast, we head towards ‘civilisation’, refuel in Solitaire and cross the Gaub River, passing the Tropic of Capricorn before plunging deep into the Kuiseb Canyon via a pass that also contains a monument to an exciting history from the Second World War. The rough gravel road now leads 150 km through the lonely silence of the northern Namib-Naukluft National Park to the roaring Atlantic Ocean. The seemingly lifeless landscape surprises us with lightning-fast oryx antelopes, springboks, ostriches and mountain zebras, which can suddenly cross the road. Only immediately before the coast do high dune belts build up again, and the air becomes noticeably fresher. In Swakopmund, our hotel awaits us on the beach ...
Today, the coastal town offers us a ‘rest day’ that we can plan entirely as we wish. You can dip your feet in the cold Atlantic Ocean at least once. The most ‘German’ city in Africa has a lot to offer. Traces of the German colonial era can be found everywhere, and even many street names have not been changed. Due to the cool climate caused by the cold Benguela Current, many locals also like to come to the coast for their holidays. Many small shops and restaurants invite you in, and countless leisure activities such as desert tours – e.g. to the ‘little big five’ in the dunes, but also boat trips or sightseeing flights – make the choice perhaps not so easy. We'll meet again for dinner in one of the city's good restaurants...
From Swakopmund, the route takes us north through Dorob National Park. We drive approximately 200 km along the Atlantic Ocean on a smooth, solid salt road. This beach landscape of Namibia's ‘Skeleton Coast’ reveals the hostility of life from a human perspective, yet it is a unique, sensitive habitat for many rare plants, small animals and breeding birds. A detour to the seal colony at Cape Cross is possible before the route leads into the much hotter interior to Uis. Passing the Messum Crater, we circle the huge Brandberg massif through a rugged, black-red coloured stone landscape. Welwitschias, rare, giant primeval plants that can live well over 1000 years, can also be seen from the side of the road. Our next accommodation awaits us in the small mining town...
After the briefing, we set off for northern Damaraland. We cross dry riverbeds, which can develop into impressive watercourses during the rainy season and provide a valuable habitat for desert elephants. The rust-red, scree-covered table mountain landscapes with their spherical, silvery-green broom-like euphorbias reflect the typical landscape of this region and are also home to springboks, giraffes and oryx antelopes, as well as the rare black rhino. We take a break at Twyfelfontein at lunchtime and reach Grootberg Lodge in the late afternoon, which is tucked away on a plateau with a magnificent view over the Klip Riviers Canyon.
From Vingerklip Lodge, our route takes us along charming gravel roads through the wild heart of Damaraland. The gravel roads, which are still very little used today, take us through the typical mopane bush savannah and past isolated farms, where dwarf antelopes, guinea fowls and warthogs can sometimes be found in the tall grass, as well as large kudu antelopes and giraffes. Behind every bend, new panoramas of dry river valleys and wide plains open up. Away from the main roads, we enjoy the unspoilt beauty of Namibia. Our destination for today, the striking Waterberg Plateau, appears on the horizon...
Today, the journey continues westwards on red tracks along charming gravel roads through wide plains and unspoilt bush savannah. Passing the Omatako Mountains, our next destination soon comes into view – the mighty Mount Etjo Table Mountain, near which the safari lodge of the same name is located. A place that combines wilderness, history and African tranquillity. The safari in the huge private game reserve is one of the most beautiful experiences of our tour, and the wonderful accommodation also spoils us with every comfort and an exquisite menu...
It's actually too beautiful to sleep in – when the hippos wake you up early or the lions roar in the distance: if not the night before, then today is safari day... we head into the bush in an off-road vehicle – on the lookout for giraffes, zebras, antelopes, rhinos and elephants! Afterwards, we set off on our final stage, back to Windhoek Mountain Lodge. We pass through remote farmland on remote gravel tracks and return to the central highlands of Namibia via Omaruru and Otjimbingwe. In the late afternoon, we reach our GravelTravel base on lonely side roads, where a very convivial evening with sundowners and a delicious barbecue awaits us.
This day is entirely at your leisure to spend at the lodge or strolling around Windhoek, depending on when your return flight departs, which is often in the evening. This gives you the opportunity to visit some of the sights in the capital, and the numerous street cafés, bazaars and shops selling local handicrafts invite you to at least observe the colourful hustle and bustle around you. We will organise your transfer to the airport from the lodge.
* The respective accommodations for the standard tour may vary due to availability. We book comparable alternatives without significantly affecting the route. Should this become necessary in individual cases, we will of course inform you.
