Namibia Classic 4x4 only

4×4 tour

Namibia Classic 4x4 only

Exploring Namibia's unique landscapes and fascinating wildlife by car offers an attractive alternative to motorcycling. The tour takes place with Toyota Hilux Safari 4x4, an off-road vehicle that is very comfortable to drive. This is the best way to experience the varied routes of the dusty gravel tracks. This pure 4x4 tour is our ‘alternative’ classic tour that includes a visit to the Etosha National Park (as only permitted by car). We may also drive to the famous Sossuvlei in the Namib-Naukluft Park.

The tour first leads through the impressive Khomas-Hochland down to the Namib Desert plain, after which we head for the tranquil town of Swakopmund, where the cool Atlantic sea breeze provides a stark contrast. The route then leads over the Brandberg through Damaraland to the Etosha Pan. From sunrise to sunset, the national park allows you to explore the fabulous wildlife and linger at waterholes - binoculars are a must! The route then takes us through private cattle and game farm areas to the Erongo Mountains, where the unique landscape formations of the volcanic ruins with their magnificent birdlife leave a great impression at the end of the tour, apart from the many beautiful and individual accommodations.

The return journey to Windhoek also takes place off the beaten track on interesting tracks, so that the driving pleasure can be savoured right to the end.

Tour profile: 14 travelling days/13 nights. Total distance approx. 3,300 km. Paved gravel roads, easy off-road terrain, daily stages between 200 km and 400 km.

* The respective accommodations for the standard tour may vary due to availability. We book comparable alternatives without significantly affecting the route. Should this become necessary in individual cases, we will of course inform you.

Your route day by day

1. day Arrival Namibia / Windhoek Mountain Lodge
Windhoek Mountain Lodge
(1 Night)

2. day: Auas Mountains / Windhoek Mountain Lodge
Windhoek Mountain Lodge
(1 Night)

Well rested and relaxed, today we will deal with a detailed travel briefing and a thorough briefing on the motorcycles and GPS devices. Then we go for an approx. 100 km inroduction tour, where you can familiarise yourself with the traffic, road conditions and technology so that we can start the tour well prepared the next morning.

3. day Auas Mountains – Sossusvlei / Namib desert
Sossusvlei Lodge
(1 Night)

After a hearty breakfast, we finally set off on our adventure and are accompanied by a wonderful play of colours of the seemingly endless, hostile expanses and the countless mountain ranges. Shortly before reaching our destination, we see the incredibly high sand dunes of the desert near Sesriem in the distance, where our next accommodation is located on the edge of the Namib-Naukluft National Park near Sossusvlei.

4. day Sossuvlei – Rotstock Mountains
Rostock Ritz Desert Lodge
(1 Night)

Today we set off before sunrise to the highest dunes in the world - Sossusvlei. In order to catch the first glow of this red dune backdrop in the early golden sun, we drive into the national park with our four-wheel drive vehicles in good time and enjoy the morning in this unique landscape. In the afternoon, we continue our tour and follow the gravel track northwards on a shorter but no less eventful stage. We soon reach the lonely desert settlement of Solitaire, as the name suggests, through open savannah rich in wildlife. Another special and unconventional accommodation in the lonely expanse of the Namib Desert awaits us near the Rotstock Mountains. An elevated pool lounge invites you to relax with a fantastic view over the endless stony desert below.

5. day Rotstock Mountains - Swakopmund
Secret Garden Guesthouse
(1 Night)

After a good breakfast, we set off towards "civilization" again today, passing the famous Tropic of Capricorn and continuing on a pass over the wild and rugged landscape of the Gaub River to the Kuiseb Canyon, another deeply furrowed river valley, where two German geologists hid for years during the Second World War and fought to survive. The impressive book "Wenn es Krieg gibt, gehen wir in die Wüste" is well worth reading. The Kuiseb Pass leads us over the rough gravel road into the huge Namib-Naukluft National Park and across to the cool Atlantic Ocean. The lonely expanse, which seems so lifeless,  surprises us again and again with oryx antelopes, springboks, ostriches and mountain zebras, which can cross our "pad" at speed. Only just before the coast do high dune belts reappear and the air becomes noticeably fresher. In Swakopmund, we stop off at a good hotel and have the opportunity to explore the historic coastal town and dip our feet in the cold sea.

6. day Swakopmund (Atlantic Coast)
Secret Garden Guesthouse
(1 Night)

Swakopmund has a lot to offer: e.g. an excursion by quad bike into the sandy dunes south of the town, a fat bike ride through the town, boat tours in Walvisbay - this day is free for individual activities. In the town's charming souvenir and jewelry stores, you will find high-quality local handicraft products for every taste and budget. Unusual pieces of jewelry with Namibian semi-precious stones are particularly popular. The Crystal Gallery or the Natural History Museum - both located near the beach - provide particularly interesting and curious insights into the country's natural treasures. There is also a snake and reptile park and a seawater aquarium. Or how about a stroll through original cafés, pubs and restaurants, or across the woodcarvers' market to the historic "Jetty" - for a glass of champagne or sushi? The impression of numerous, well-preserved buildings in the typical colonial style from imperial times in the small town surrounded by pure desert scenery and fresh sea air ... definitely wants to be "reconnected" with the feeling of being in Africa...

7. day Swakopmund – Brandberg Mountain
Brandberg White Lady Lodge
(1 Night)

From Swakopmund, the route leads us about 200 km northwards along the Atlantic Ocean through the Dorob National Park on a smooth, hard salt road and gives us a lasting impression of Namibia's beach landscapes of the "Skeleton Coast" - whose obvious hostility to life from a human perspective belies the unique, sensitive habitat for many rare plants, small animals and breeding birds. A detour to the seal colony in Cape Cross is possible before the route leads into the much hotter interior towards Uis. Passing the Messum Crater, we then pass the huge Brandberg massif with its rugged, black and red rocky landscape. A special companion on our route here is the Welwitschia, another rare, bizarre giant plant that can live to be well over 1000 years old. After the small mining town of Uis, we immerse ourselves in the wild, vast landscape of Damaraland for the last few kilometers - on the edge of the massive Brandberg massif, the lodge is located on the gallery forest of the Ugab River, which is known for its desert elephants, which occasionally pass by here to eat the nutritious tree pods ...

8. day Brandberg - Grootberg Lodge
Grootberg Lodge
(1 Night)

After the briefing, we set off for northern Damaraland. We cross dry river beds, which can develop into respectable watercourses in the rainy season; this is where the desert elephants find their valuable habitat. The oxide-red, scree-covered table mountain landscapes with their spherical, silvery-green broom-shrub euphorbias reflect the typical landscape of this region and are also home to springboks, giraffes and oryx antelopes as well as the rare black rhino. We take a break in Twyfelfontein over lunchtime and reach the Grootberg Lodge in the late afternoon. It is tucked away on a plateau - with a gigantic view over the "Klip Rivier" canyon.

9. Tag: Grootberg - Hobatere
Hobatere Lodge
(1 Night)

10. day Etosha National Park
Etosha Safari Lodge & Camp
(1 Night)

Today we should set off early in the morning on the first complete Etosha stage, as experience has shown that we only make very slow progress in the National Park. This is not only due to the speed limit of 60 km/h, but also to the fact that we will keep seeing animals that encourage us to stop and observe them. There are also lots of little extra trips to the somewhat remote waterholes, where all the animals have to come together at some point. All this makes the route longer and the time precious. It is important to know that we generally have to cater for ourselves at lunchtime on the tour. We take lunch packs with us into Etosha, as there are no suitable places to stop for refreshments on our route in the national park itself. Moreover, you are not allowed to get out of the car except at specially designated rest areas. We have to leave the park before sunset. We take a lodge right behind the gate so that we can drive back into the park the next morning

11. day Etosha NP
Etosha Safari Lodge & Camp
(1 Night)

The eastern part of Etosha National Park is even more exciting than the first, as you can also encounter big cats here. From our own experience, we can say that there are cheetahs and lions. But admittedly, it is very rare to see the big cats. As you are not allowed to leave your car anywhere in the national park at any time, small plots have been set up especially for breaks, where people are fenced off from nature. A zoo the other way round. In the evening, we have to leave the park before sunset. We do this again through the southern gate, as we came, so that we can spend a second night in our cosy lodge. As we only have 160 kilometres ahead of us on the direct route, i.e. without any detours, we will have plenty of time to explore. However, there may be a few more kilometres to go, as curiosity always drives us around the next bend. There could still be elephants...

12. day Etosha - Erongo Mountains
Ondudu Safari Lodge
(1 Night)

After a sumptuous breakfast, we set off into yet another completely different landscape. The Erongo Mountains are a fantastic rock formation that offers many bizarre facets and is an impressive sight even from a distance. Almost as high as the Brandberg, but much larger in size. Countless leopards live here and find shelter everywhere in the mountains. Most of them are so good that they are rarely seen. But who knows, with a bit of luck and a lot of patience

13. day Erongo – Windhoek
Windhoek Mountain Lodge
(1 Night)

The last major driving stage takes us via Wilhelmstal on the smallest gravel roads through the Khomas Highlands. A very interesting final stretch back to Windhoek off the beaten track, where we review a fantastic journey and the countless discoveries and wonderful experiences of the last two weeks and let ourselves be enchanted by Africa one last time at our Windhoek Mountain Lodge. Perhaps not for the last time...

14. day Windhoek - Int. Airport (Hosea Kutako)

This day is at your leisure at the lodge or for a stroll in Windhoek. Depending on your individual departure time, you can plan your day freely today, as the flight often only leaves in the evening. Some of the sights can be visited in the capital and numerous street cafés as well as bazaars and shops with local handicrafts invite you to at least observe the hustle and bustle all around. Whatever the case, we'll make sure you get to the airport on time...
