Focus Namibia – Photo tour with Dirk Schäfer
14 days of adventure, light and unforgettable motifs. This exclusive Gravel Travel photo tour takes you and Dirk Schäfer to the fascinating heart of Namibia, with its spectacular landscapes, intense colours and endless expanses.
For two weeks, you will experience Namibia from a photographer's perspective: from the golden light on the dunes of Sossusvlei to encounters with big game and rare life forms that are unique to Namibia. Along the way, Dirk Schäfer will share his extensive knowledge of landscape, wildlife and travel photography – in a practical, understandable way and with a trained eye for the extraordinary.
The route is deliberately tailored to photographic highlights. We travel in a small group in 4x4 off-road vehicles, stay in selected lodges and camps, and are always on site when the light is at its best. Away from the main routes, you will experience Namibia authentically, intensively and with plenty of space for your photographic adventure.
This trip is aimed at anyone who wants to develop their photography skills while experiencing a real African adventure – with the usual mix of adventure, professionalism and passion that characterises Gravel Travel.
Focus Namibia – wild, unspoilt, photogenic.

Arrival at Windhoek International Airport and pick-up by us. A one-hour transfer will take you to our comfortable Windhoek Mountain Lodge in the Auas Mountains south of the capital Windhoek – our base station for all Gravel Travel tours in Namibia. Here you will have plenty of opportunity to acclimatise and relax by the pool, which offers charming views of the surrounding mountain ranges. In the afternoon, there will be a tour briefing, which includes an intensive introduction and test drive with our vehicles, riding technique and GPS navigation. In the evening, we will serve our legendary Bushman fondue.
After a brief morning briefing, we set off on a journey along relatively shallow gravel roads to the south-eastern part of the country. Thorn bush savannah and barren pastureland, where Karakul sheep typical of the region graze, characterise the landscape on the edge of the Kalahari. Passing through tiny villages such as Uhlenhorst and Stampriet, we finally reach our first lodge through the charming Auob Valley, whose landscape we will explore in more detail later on...
The journey continues through the western Kalahari, past the green oasis of Stampriet, where artesian wells enable vegetables to be grown and where the Auob River turns eastwards. Here begins an interesting ride up and down the dune belts of orange-red sand, which, however, look more like chains of hills due to the dense vegetation in places. Finally, near Koës, we reach the rolling hills and wide open spaces that are so typical of the Keetmanshoop area. The Giant's Playground – a collection of wondrously piled boulders – and the famous quiver tree forest with its tree-high aloe plants on the Gariganus farm are our destinations for today.
Today we set off early to allow ourselves a ‘short’ detour south to Fish River Canyon before heading north again. This stage is characterised by a very varied desert landscape, canyons, mountain ranges and wide plains, providing us with a wide variety of scenery. Our destination for the evening is the Helmeringhausen Adventure Camp, built especially for us, where we will be ‘camping’ in comfort in the charming camel thorn landscape... nothing is missing there and the evening around the campfire is sure to be a long one, not least because this enchanting place is ideal for astrophotography...
We start the day with a refreshing shower under the rustic camel thorn trees and breakfast in the wilderness. The track leads north, accompanied by a wonderful play of colours in the seemingly endless, hostile expanse of the Namib Desert and its mountain ranges on the edge of the national park. The incredibly high sand dunes of the world's oldest desert are our destination for today.
Today we are travelling to the world-famous Sossusvlei, a salt-clay pan at the end of the Tsauchab River, surrounded by the highest dunes in the world. This unique landscape lies in the heart of the Namib-Naukluft National Park. We are getting up very early today to admire the first rays of sunlight shining on this red dune backdrop...
Today's stage takes us further north to the fantastic scenery of the picturesque Namib Desert. As we will not return from our Sossusvlei excursion until around midday, the distance to our next private lodge is not that far. While the red dunes accompany us on the left, the rugged rocky mountains of the Naukluft line our track on the right. Oryx antelopes and zebras graze on the golden grass savannah. Our destination is the Namib Naukluft Lodge, nestled between large granite rocks and the gentle desert landscape, balm for all the senses, and fantastic photo opportunities await us here...
After breakfast, we head towards ‘civilisation’, refuel in Solitaire and cross the Gaub River, passing the Tropic of Capricorn before plunging deep into the Kuiseb Canyon via a pass that also contains a monument to an exciting history from the Second World War. The rough gravel road now leads 150 km through the lonely silence of the northern Namib-Naukluft National Park to the roaring Atlantic Ocean. The seemingly lifeless landscape surprises us with lightning-fast oryx antelopes, springboks, ostriches and mountain zebras, which can suddenly cross the road. Only immediately before the coast do high dune belts build up again, and the air becomes noticeably fresher. In Swakopmund, our hotel awaits us on the beach ...
Today, the coastal town offers us a ‘rest day’ that we can plan entirely as we wish. You can dip your feet in the cold Atlantic Ocean at least once. The most ‘German’ city in Africa has a lot to offer. Traces of the German colonial era can be found everywhere, and even many street names have not been changed. Due to the cool climate caused by the cold Benguela Current, many locals also like to come to the coast for their holidays. Many small shops and restaurants invite you in, and countless leisure activities such as desert tours – e.g. to the ‘little big five’ in the dunes, but also boat trips or sightseeing flights – make the choice perhaps not so easy. We'll meet again for dinner in one of the city's good restaurants...
From Swakopmund, the route takes us close to the Atlantic Ocean through Dorob National Park on a smooth, solid salt road heading north, leaving a lasting impression of Namibia's beach landscapes on the ‘Skeleton Coast’ – whose apparent hostility to life from a human perspective may belie the unique, sensitive habitat for many rare plants, small animals and breeding birds. Heading inland, we reach the magnificent Spitzkoppe, which rises out of the flat semi-desert landscape, Namibia's ‘Matterhorn’. Simple tracks allow us to pass between the bizarre, imposing and extremely photogenic granite formations. After a short photo break, we continue eastwards, the rough gravel roads leading us to the mighty Erongo Mountains. Along the steep walls of this 120-million-year-old volcanic ruin, we reach our next lodge ...
Perhaps a hike through the granite rocks above the lodge is possible before breakfast. The landscape is brimming with impressive rock paintings that are thousands of years old. Today's route takes us from the Erongo region along picturesque gravel roads through vast savannahs and the rolling hills of Damaraland. On the quiet roads, we experience unspoilt landscapes and impressive views. Passing large dry river valleys, Namibia shows itself from its most authentic side here. Shortly before the spectacular Ugab Terraces, a small gravel road branches off, leading us directly to Vingerklip Lodge. Today's tour ends with the unique sight of the imposing ‘Vingerklip’ rock towering over the wide plain.
From Vingerklip Lodge, our route takes us along charming gravel roads through the wild heart of Damaraland. These gravel roads, which are still very little used today, lead us past endless thorn bush savannah and lonely farms, where oryx antelopes and springboks often cross our path. Behind every bend, new panoramas of dry river valleys and vast plateaus open up. Away from the main roads, we enjoy the unspoilt beauty of Namibia. In the midst of vast bush landscapes, we finally approach Otjiwa Lodge with the Otjiwa Game Reserve, one of the oldest private game reserves in Namibia.
From Otjiwa Lodge, today's journey continues along charming gravel roads through vast plains and pristine bush savannahs. Far away from any main roads, the route takes us through farmland and wildlife areas, where kudus, oryx and ostriches can often be seen standing at the side of the road. The view of the Omboroko Mountains and the vastness of the central highlands never fails to impress. Shortly before reaching our destination, the mighty Mount Etjo Table Mountain appears, near which the safari lodge of the same name is located. It is a place that combines wilderness, history and African tranquillity. The safari in the huge private game reserve is one of the most beautiful experiences of our tour, and a good telephoto lens is in its element here.
It's actually too beautiful to sleep in – when the hippos wake you up early or the lions roar in the distance: if not the night before, then today is safari day... we head into the bush in an off-road vehicle – on the lookout for giraffes, zebras, antelopes, rhinos and elephants! Afterwards, we set off on our final stage, back to Windhoek Mountain Lodge. We pass through remote farmland on remote gravel tracks and return to the central highlands of Namibia via Omaruru and Otjimbingwe. In the late afternoon, we reach our GravelTravel base on lonely side roads, where a very convivial evening with sundowners and a delicious barbecue awaits us.
This day is entirely at your leisure to spend at the lodge or strolling around Windhoek. Depending on your individual departure time, you can plan your day as you wish, as flights often do not leave until the evening. This gives you the opportunity to visit some of the sights in the capital, and the numerous street cafés, bazaars and shops selling local handicrafts invite you to at least observe the colourful hustle and bustle around you.
